At this point most of my carving is done, you can see that I have added some negative space by cutting all of the way through the band and tapering the areas to create the illusion of depth. This is a traditional sculpting technique developed for relief carving. technically a ring when thought of as a sculpture is a relief carving, the hole going through the center of the ring dictates how much material you can carve away. If you took measurements off of a human skull and compared them to this piece you would see that they do not match up. Because most of this piece was carved using simple relief carving tricks to fool your brain into believing that this is a shape that resembles a human skull. In reality it is bulbous and elongated in places, as well as very stylized.
